Reading charts

Trend, volume, moving averages and the honest limits of chart reading.

Trend and structure

4 min read

A trend is described by structure. An uptrend makes higher highs and higher lows. A downtrend makes lower highs and lower lows. Anything else is a range.

Timeframe determines the answer. The same stock can be in a one-day downtrend, a five-day range, and a one-year uptrend simultaneously. Always state the timeframe when you state a trend, and match it to how long you intend to hold.

Day traders read minutes and hours.

Swing traders read days and weeks.

Long-term investors read months and years, and mostly use charts for context rather than timing.

Use the 1D and 5D ranges on any SavantStox chart to see how quickly the story changes with the window.
